The
Barbican had a total Immersion day on the theme of new music from Denmark and
Finland. The evening concert consisted of four UK premiers by Sunleif
Rasmussen, Sebastian Fagerlund (an incredible Clarinet concerto), Magnus
Lindberg and Per Norgard. I knew virtually nothing of any them and was so glad
I went. It was incredible music; clearly modern and clearly from that part of
the world. I’m left feeling daunted at a whole new road to go down – one that, from
the BBC SO description, any normal person knows about already!

The Nordic giants of our time stride across this important programme, a must-hear event. A new symphony by great Dane Per Nørgard is always eagerly anticipated, promising as it does his visionary evocation of the elemental world. Dazzlingly gifted Finn Magnus Lindberg brings his latest orchestral creation Era while the young Sebastian Fagerlund's phantasmagorial Clarinet Concerto conjures startling and ravishing sonorities from its virtuoso dedicatee Christoffer Sundquvist and the orchestra.
