I’m not generally a great fan of period costume ballets but thought
I’d give this one a whirl. The dancing by the principals was, as ever,
accomplished with some great ‘set pieces’ but the story is rather predictable
of silly Onegin rejecting the interest of the lovely Tatiana only for him then
to be hugely attracted to her some years later but now it is her turn to reject
him. In the early stage, he had flirted with Tatiana’s sister (Olga) which
resulted in Onegin being challenged to a duel by his ‘friend’ and Olga’s
fiancé, who Onegin kills. The Wikipedia notes give an interesting insight on
the legalities and etiquette of duels and full details of the duel as described
in Pushkin’s novel on which the ballet is based. Reading these was helpful to
viewing the duel in the ballet.
