A somewhat
unsatisfactory opera by Britten about Elizabeth I, set as if being staged in
1953 for Elizabeth II. i.e., the set was a village hall type of theatre. The
action follows the ambitions of Essex and his wife and his downfall and
execution as well as his rivalry with Mountjoy who is having an affair with
Essex’s sister, Penelope. An excellent production and staging of a rather
tedious opera.
