A sell-out
production that has received great reviews (5 stars from the FT). It focuses on
the Whips for the minority governments of the end of the Heath / Wilson /
Callaghan era. It is a very well-constructed play and the audience are cleverly
reminded of the circumstances – a blackboard gives the tally of those for and
against the government. But I came away wondering what the point of it was. It
is a useful historical account. But does it tell us anything we don’t know? All
it adds is a spin on how biddable some odds and sods (minority parties) were;
and how principled others were. So, a good evening’s entertainment but one that
is unlikely to linger in the memory and certainly not one to rush back and see
again.
