The triple bill, comprising Apollo
and two new works: 24 preludes by
Ratmansky and Aeternum by Wheeldon.
I thought the Apollo was dramatic, reinforced by the set – a turquoise backdrop
and flight of steps. The unfolding of Apollo struck me as particularly
effective and Melissa Hamilton shone I thought. The 24 preludes is just that;
dance to 24 of Chopin’s preludes against a backdrop of a cloudy sky. I’m sure
the dancing was technically very accomplished in a classical sort of way but I
found my minding drifting in and out. Aeternum was more engaging for me; a
brief (21 mins) piece with Marianela Nunez as the star. Music by Britten.
