2 March 2013. Consciousness at the Barbican.
Mainly a lecture hosted by Marcus du Sautoy with the four professors
doing guest turns. After the interval a quite lengthy set by James Holden,
Etienne Jaumet, Tom Page and Camilo Tirado
which was supposed to elevate the audiences consciousness to 11 on the
Phi scale – but we were never told whether it had done so, how we would know or
what the effect might be. A slightly disappointing evening although it provided
some amazing graphics of neural networks and a general update on the strides
now being taken in brain research. It looks like the reductionism we always
knew was theoretically possible might become a practical reality. But that
doesn’t win the reductionist argument.
